August 6 & 9, 1945 – In a final attempt to force the Japanese to surrender, America drops two atomic bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
The blasts level both cities and kill more than 150,000 people, forcing Japan to the negotiating table. They surrender unconditionally on August 15. The use of atomic weapons remains controversial, however most historians agree that the bombings were instrumental in forcing the Japanese to surrender and ending the war.
