5-day Western Front and Normandy Private Tour

This private tour brings both World Wars to life on the very ground where history was made, guided by our expert Historian. Journey through the WWI battlefields of the Western Front across northern France and Belgium, then trace the story of D-Day along the landing beaches of Normandy

Day 1 > PARIS TO NORMANDY

This morning meet your historian at 9am in the lobby of your Paris hotel for the drive to Normandy and the start of your tour of the British sector. Our first stop is Ranville War Cemetery, last resting place of many of the men who fell in the opening hours of the invasion, in the first village in France to be liberated by the Allies. From here we continue to Pegasus Bridge, hearing the story of the daring coup de main operation in which British glider-borne troops captured this vital crossing, along with neighbouring Horsa Bridge, in the first minutes of 6 June 1944 – we will explore the excellent museum and see the original bridge, now preserved on site. We then visit the Hillman German Bunker Complex, a formidable network of fortified positions overlooking Sword Beach at Ouistreham, which continued to hold out against British attackers for much of D-Day. In the late afternoon we arrive in the historic town of Bayeux, famed for its cathedral and medieval tapestry, where your Historian will transfer you to your hotel for a two-night stay.

OVERNIGHT: Domaine De Bayeux, Bayeux or similar  – 2 nights

STAR INCLUSIONS  ★ Pick-up from your Paris hotel  ★ Pegasus Bridge  ★ Hillman Bunker Complex

★ Sword Beach & British Landing Sites  ★ Ranville War Cemetery

Day 2 > NORMANDY AMERICAN SECTOR

Today you will have a full day exploring the American D-Day battlefields. We begin with a visit to La Cambe German Cemetery, the resting place of more than 21,000 German soldiers and a sobering reminder that the cost of the invasion was shared by both sides. Leaving La Cambe we drive through the famous Norman ‘bocage’, the ancient hedged countryside that proved such an obstacle for Allied troops after the landings, before arriving at Utah Beach, the westernmost of the five landing beaches, where you will have the chance to walk the sand where American paratroopers and infantry came ashore against comparatively light resistance. Our next stop is the village of Sainte-Mère-Église, one of the first towns liberated by the Allies and made famous by the story of paratrooper John Steele, whose parachute caught on the church spire during the night drop. We will enjoy a light lunch in the town square before exploring the excellent Airborne Museum. In the afternoon we travel to Colleville-sur-Mer and the Normandy American Cemetery, resting place of more than 9,000 American servicemen on the bluffs above Omaha Beach, a site made famous by the film Saving Private Ryan. We finish our day at Omaha Beach itself, the bloodiest landing site of D-Day, where American troops came ashore under a hail of gunfire, before returning to Bayeux in the early evening. (B)

OVERNIGHT: Domaine De Bayeux, Bayeux or similar

STAR INCLUSIONS  ★ La Cambe German Cemetery  ★ Utah Beach  ★ Sainte-Mère-Église & Airborne Museum

★ Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-sur-Mer  ★ Omaha Beach

Day 3 > BRITISH SECTOR – THE SOMME

After checking out of your Bayeux hotel, you finish exploring the British sector before beginning your journey north to the Somme. You start at the British Normandy Memorial, the newest and most poignant memorial on the D-Day beaches, which records the names of the 22,442 men and women under British command who lost their lives on D-Day and during the Battle of Normandy. From here you travel to Arromanches, overlooking Gold Beach, to hear the remarkable story of the artificial Mulberry Harbour towed across the Channel to supply the invasion – the remains of the harbour can still be seen from the beach today. Your final stop in Normandy is the Longues-sur-Mer German Battery, the only coastal battery in Normandy to retain its original guns, a site made famous by the film The Longest Day. You depart Normandy for the Somme, touring through the Normandy and Picardy countryside along the way, and arrive in the cathedral city of Amiens in the early evening, where you will check in to your hotel for the night. (B)

OVERNIGHT: Mercure Amiens Cathedrale, Amiens or similar – 1 night

STAR INCLUSIONS  ★ British Normandy Memorial  ★ Arromanches & Gold Beach  ★ Mulberry Harbour

★ Longues-sur-Mer German Battery

Day 4 > SOMME 1918 – YPRES

Today you explore the Somme battlefields of 1918, with a particular focus on the achievements of the Australian Corps under Sir John Monash. Departing Amiens, your first stop is Villers-Bretonneux, the town liberated by Australian troops on Anzac Day 1918, where you visit Adelaide Cemetery, once the resting place of Australia’s Unknown Soldier before his re-interment in Canberra in 1993. From here you travel to Le Hamel and the Australian Corps Memorial Park, site of Monash’s masterfully planned attack in July 1918, which pioneered the combined-arms tactics later used to win the war. You then visit the imposing Australian National Memorial, where the names of nearly 11,000 Australians with no known grave in France are recorded, before enjoying a late lunch at the Sir John Monash Centre, the striking interpretive centre that tells the story of Australia’s achievements on the Western Front. In the afternoon you travel to Pozieres, scene of the most costly battle in Australia’s history, to visit the 1st Division Memorial, the Windmill site and the Tank Corps Memorial. You arrive in the medieval town of Ypres late afternoon and check in to your hotel. This evening you will walk to the Menin Gate, where the names of 54,000 missing British and Commonwealth soldiers are recorded, for the moving Last Post ceremony. The Ypres fire brigade has performed this bugle ceremony every day and in all weather since the memorial opened in 1927. The only interruption was during the four years of German occupation during the Second World War, and the ceremony recommenced on the day the town was liberated. (B, L)

OVERNIGHT: Albion Hotel Ypres, or similar 1 night

STAR INCLUSIONS  ★ Full day touring the Australian battlefields of the Somme, 1918  ★ Sir John Monash Centre

★ Attendance at the Last Post Service at the Menin Gate

Day 5 > YPRES SALIENT

Your final day explores various destinations on the Ypres Salient, places where the Anzacs made history in 1917. The Ypres Salient was a bulge in the front line that curved around Ypres for most of the war. More than a million men were killed or wounded trying to gain control of this small patch of ground.
You begin at Hill 60, where the preserved, cratered landscape tells the story of the brutal underground mining war fought beneath the battlefield. From here you visit Polygon Wood, home to the 5th Australian Division Memorial, and see the graves of Private Hunter and Sergeant Calder, the two Australian soldiers who featured in Mat McLachlan’s documentary Lost in Flanders.
This afternoon you will visit Tyne Cot, the world’s largest Commonwealth war cemetery. Tyne Cot sits in the heart of one of the most horrific battlefields of the war — Passchendaele.
You enjoy lunch at a local café, before making your way to Fromelles, the site of Australia’s first action on the Western Front and its bloodiest single day. Here you visit VC Corner, the only all-Australian cemetery in France, the Cobbers Memorial Park and the Fromelles Museum. In the late afternoon your historian will drive you across the French border to Lille, where you will be dropped at Lille Flanders Station at approx. 5:30pm for your onward train connection. (B, L)
