June to August 2024 marks the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Normandy – the campaign that liberated France from Nazi occupation. Commencing with the D-Day landings on 6 June 1944, Operation Overlord was the largest amphibious assault in history, beginning the march eastward to defeat Germany. Our special group will cruise the River Seine aboard AMADEUS Diamond, beginning and ending in Paris, enjoying the French countryside and picturesque towns while uncovering the history of the Battle of Normandy. Escorted by an expert battlefield Historian, our special tour includes evening seminars and two days comprehensive touring of the D-Day beaches.

80th Anniversary of the Battle of Normandy aboard AMADEUS Diamond

The D-Day landings in Normandy, France during WW2 were part of the largest seaborne attack in history. Codenamed Operation Neptune, the D-Day landings involved 7000 Allied warships, vessels and landing craft manned by over 195,000 naval personnel from eight allied countries, as well as an airborne attack, designed to simultaneously land around 150,000 Allied troops on five separate beachheads in Normandy. This marked the beginning of Operation Overlord, the campaign to liberate Normandy from Nazi Germany. Around 3,300 Australians served in the D-Day landings as attachments to British units, mostly in the air – with 2,500 Australian airforce personnel serving in 200 Royal Air Force squadrons – but also at sea and on land.

Within a few days of D-Day, over 320,000 troops, more than 50,000 vehicles and some 100,000 tonnes of equipment had been landed, and in the weeks that followed the Allied forces fought hard and gained significant ground. By August 1944, all of northern France had been liberated. Join our expert battlefield Historian to uncover the history of the Battle of Normandy, from the D-Day landings through to the ultimate success of the campaign to end WW2, while at the same time exploring the beauty and culture of France and Normandy cruising the River Seine.

Our special group will be met at Le Havre Pier by our coach at 9am, to travel to Point du Hoc, an elevated vantage point from which huge German guns with could deliver fire on both Omaha Beach and Utah Beach. German bunkers still stand here and craters made by the bombing can be seen. From here, you can also see the edge of the famous Norman ‘bocage’, the ancient hedged countryside that was an obstacle for Allied troops. We then visit the infamous Omaha Beach, the bloodiest landing site on D-Day, and see where American troops came ashore under a hail of gunfire and suffered thousands of casualties. This was the action famously depicted in Saving Private Ryan. We pay our respects at the huge American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer, which was also featured in Saving Private Ryan and is the last resting place of more than 9000 servicemen killed in Normandy.
