Thailand is a kingdom of wonder, filled with spectacular natural, cultural, and historical attractions – including WW2 history.

Hellfire Pass was the deepest and longest cutting along the entire length of 415-kilometre Burma-Thailand ‘Death’ railway, which was built by Allied Prisoners of War. Over time, Hellfire Pass came to symbolise the suffering of Australian POWs during WW2. Over 30,000 Australian service people became prisoners of the Imperial Japanese during the Pacific War, with around half put to work on the Burma-Thailand Railway. Hellfire Pass is located in Kanchanaburi Province in Thailand, and this area has many notable historical sites relating to this time which we visit on this very special tour.

Itinerary

Day 1 > Thursday, 22 April 2027 I Arrive Bangkok

Welcome to our Anzac Day Hellfire Pass tour. After checking in to our Bangkok hotel, we will come together this evening to enjoy a welcome dinner. This is an excellent opportunity to get to know our fellow passengers and Historian. (D)

Day 2 > Friday, 23 April 2027 I Bangkok to Kanchanaburi

This morning at approximately 8.00am you will be met in the lobby of your Bangkok hotel by your Historian and depart Bangkok for the 3-hour drive to Kanchanaburi.

On the way, visit Ban Pong and the nearby POW camp to learn where all Thailand Prisoners of War (POWs) arrived by train from Singapore prior to being sent to their intended area of railway construction. Continue following their route to Kanchanaburi and on arrival, visit the Thailand–Burma Railway Centre which is an interactive museum, information and research facility dedicated to presenting the history of the Thailand–Burma Railway. Receive an introductory talk on the railway by Researchers of the Centre before spending time exploring the museum for a background understanding of the history and an understanding of what lies ahead in the coming days.

This afternoon, continue with an introductory exploration of key railway sites around Kanchanaburi to gain an understanding of the workings of the Thailand–Burma Railway and the camp system that supported its construction. Visit the former locations of F & H (Hospital) Camp, Kanchanaburi Aerodrome Camp and nearby Chungkai Camp, while exploring the surrounding work areas where prisoners laboured on large embankments, bridges and cuttings. Later, travel by long-tail boat along the Kwai River to the iconic Bridge on the River Kwai and learn about Tha Makham Camp, which supplied labour for the bridge’s construction. There will be an opportunity to walk part of the bridge before continuing to the Royal River Kwai Resort for check-in at approximately 5.30pm. Enjoy the remainder of the evening at your leisure and overnight in Kanchanaburi. (B, L)

Day 3 > Saturday, 24 April 2027 I Kanchanaburi to River Kwai

This morning at approximately 8.30am, we will meet at your resort to begin the first day of our up-country exploration of the Thailand–Burma Railway. Travelling north, follow the route of the railway via several POW camp locations before continuing to the remarkable Wang Pho Viaduct to gain an understanding of the challenges faced during its construction.

Continue to Tha Sao to explore the layout and configuration of this significant camp, which originally served as the Base Camp for Group 4 before later becoming a hospital camp. From here, travel onwards to Kinsaiyok, a major wartime camp and railway station, where remnants of the original railway can still be viewed.

Later, visit the Australian Government-funded Hellfire Pass Interpretive Centre and walking trail to gain insight into some of the most difficult and demanding work undertaken on the railway. This is also the location where you will attend tomorrow morning’s ANZAC Day Dawn Service.

In the late afternoon, arrive at the Home Phutoey River Kwai Resort and enjoy time to explore the Weary Dunlop Memorial and the Jack Chalker Gallery, dedicated to the renowned POW artist. This evening, enjoy dinner at the resort before an early night ahead of a very early departure (approximately 2.45am) for the ANZAC Day Dawn Service at Hellfire Pass tomorrow. (B, L, D)

OVERNIGHT: Home Phutoey River Kwai Resort

Day 4 > Sunday, 25 April 2027 I Anzac Day

We will depart at 2.45am to travel to nearby Hellfire Pass for the Dawn Service that starts near the “Cutting” at 5.30am. Following the service, there will be an opportunity to join the traditional “gunfire breakfast” from around 7.00am.

Later this morning, spend time at the Hellfire Pass Interpretive Centre and surrounding area, where your Historian will provide further insight into the events that took place here during WWII and the extraordinary scale of the railway construction undertaken by hand under incredibly difficult conditions.

At approximately 10.00am–10.30am, return to the resort to collect luggage and check out before continuing to Namtok to board the 12.55pm train on the still-operating section of the historic Thailand–Burma Railway for the scenic journey back to Kanchanaburi, arriving at approximately 3.00pm. A takeaway lunch pack will be provided for the journey.

Following the very early start to the day, return to the Royal River Kwai Resort where the remainder of the afternoon and evening is yours to enjoy at leisure — relax by the pool, unwind by the riverside, or simply enjoy some well-earned downtime. (B, L)

Three Pagodas Pass or Dan Chedi Sam Ong in Thailand - It is one of the few passes in the Tenasserim Hills. The pass is named after three pagodas erected in 1929 by Phra Sri Suwan Khiri, the ruler of Sangkhla Buri, with the assistance of local villagers, and has reputedly served as a route for Indian monks in the 3rd century to disseminate Buddhism in Thailand.

Headstones at Kanchanaburi War Cemetery - There are now 5,085 Commonwealth casualties of the Second World War buried or commemorated in this cemetery. There are also 1,896 Dutch war graves and 1 non-war grave.
