Borneo Day Tours
Between 1 May to 15 August 1945, in the last offensive operation in the South Pacific, Australian troops landed on the island of Borneo. In a series of battles, most notably at Tarakan, Balikpapan and Labuan, the Australians forced the Japanese garrison from their strongholds on the island. The campaign ended with the Japanese surrender in August 1945. As with the Bougainville Campaign, Borneo has been criticised as unnecessary – the Japanese defenders were cut off, and could have been contained until the Japanese surrender. However, the campaign did achieve its objectives of pushing the Japanese further away from Australia, and led to the liberation of Allied prisoners being held in deplorable conditions. We offer three separate day tours in Sandakan, Kota Kinabalu and Labuan. Choose one or all three to experience the Borneo battlefields with our expert guides.
On arrival at Sandakan you will be met by your Guide. Proceed to Sandakan town to visit the Sandakan Memorial POW camp and spend some peaceful time exploring it, reading the names and viewing the information panels and historic photographs on the site. Next you will visit the church of St. Michaels and All Angels, where many POWs spent the night before marching to the 8-mile camp. You will have time to view the beautiful stained-glass ‘Windows of Remembrance’ at the church, visit the Agnes Keith House museum and enjoy the views from the nearby Observation Pavilion.
