Join Mat McLachlan to follow in the footsteps of the Anzacs at Gallipoli, on the only tour to be personally escorted by Mat in 2025.

A special note from Mat McLachlan: Welcome to my Signature Tour, the only tour I am personally escorting in 2025. This year, for the first time, my tour is going to Gallipoli, to commemorate the 110th anniversary of the campaign. On this tour we will walk the battlefield that features in my newest book Krithia: The Forgotten Anzac Battle of Gallipoli, as well as exploring all the key sites on the Gallipoli peninsula, telling the story of the Anzacs in our most iconic campaign.  And as an added bonus, we will be joined on the tour by historian Peter Hart, one of the world’s leading authorities on the Gallipoli campaign.

Over 10 days, we will explore the Anzac Sector, Helles and Krithia, uncovering the stories of the landings, the August Offensive, right through to the Gallipoli evacuation.

Don’t forget to bring your walking shoes – we will get off the beaten path to explore battlefield sites that are rarely seen by visitors. And like always on my Signature Tour, we will see lots of bonus sites that are not included on our regular tours. It’s going to be a very special experience, and I look forward to hosting you!

PLEASE NOTE: A key component of this tour is seeing the battlefields on foot, which will involve dedicated walking days over rough and sometimes steep terrain. Therefore, a minimum level of physical fitness is required to join this tour. Participants must be capable of walking up to 5 kilometres. Please speak to your Mat McLachlan Battlefield Tours consultant for more information.

Day 1 > Wednesday, 21 May 2025 | Arrive Istanbul

Welcome to my Signature Tour! This evening, meet me, co-host Peter Hart, our local Turkish tour escort and our travelling companions at our Istanbul hotel. We will enjoy a welcome dinner together, the perfect opportunity to get to know each other better and discuss our upcoming journey in the footsteps of the Anzacs. You may wish to arrive in Istanbul several days before the tour begins to explore this remarkable city. (D)

Day 2 > Thursday, 22 May 2025 | Istanbul to Gallipoli

This morning we will depart Istanbul for the four-hour drive to the Gallipoli peninsula. En-route Peter Hart and I will provide a thorough briefing on the origins of the campaign, as we drive along the shores of the Sea of Marmara and the Dardanelles, the waterway that was the key objective of the entire campaign. On arrival in Canakkale we will check in to our hotel and enjoy dinner. (B, D)

Day 3 > Friday, 23 May 2025 | Anzac Sector

This morning we will drive to the battlefields in the Anzac Sector and explore iconic sites associated with Australian and New Zealand courage and sacrifice. These include Anzac Cove, Shrapnel Valley, Lone Pine, Quinn’s Post, the Nek and more. During this emotional day, Pete and I will show you secret sites and original trenches that will bring the history of the Anzacs to life. In the evening we will return to our hotel. (B, L)

Day 4 > Saturday, 24 May 2025 | Walking Anzac

Strap on your walking boots! This morning we will head back to the Anzac Sector to explore the battlefields on foot. We will walk on original wartime tracks that give us a unique perspective of the battlefields, in the footsteps of the original Anzacs. At the end of this very special day we will return to our hotel. (B, L)

Approximate walking today: 5km (rough and sometimes uphill terrain)

Day 5 > Sunday, 25 May 2025 | Helles Sector

This morning we will head south to explore the Cape Helles sector of the peninsula. Although this is generally considered to be a British and French sector, it also has a very strong Anzac connection, which I explored in my latest book, Krithia. While at Helles we will visit the landing beaches where the British were cut down at the same time as the Anzacs came ashore at Anzac Cove. We will also visit the magnificent Turkish Martyr’s Memorial, the French Cemetery and Memorial and the Helles Memorial, as well as many other special sites that tell the story of the bitter fighting in this sector. In the evening we will return to our hotel. (B, L)

Day 6 > Monday, 26 May 2025 | Rest Day: Troy

A change of pace today to give us time to explore the cultural treasures and broader history of the region with a trip to nearby Ancient Troy or choose to simply relax. (B)

Day 7 > Tuesday, 27 May 2025 | Walking Helles and Krithia

We return to the battlefields this morning to explore some of the key battle sites of Cape Helles on foot. In May 1915, Anzac troops were sent to Helles as reinforcements, and fought in a bloody battle near the village of Krithia. The most moving part of our day will be walking in the footsteps of their advance, from their landing point at V Beach to their starting trenches, and out across the killing fields where more than 2000 of them fell. We will pay our respects to the lost Anzacs at their final resting place, Redoubt Cemetery. We will also explore other key battle sites during the day, seeing the remains of original redoubts, trenches and battlefields from the campaign. In the evening we will return to our hotel. (B, L)

Approximate walking today: 10km (rough terrain)

Day 8 > Wednesday, 28 May 2025 | August Offensive and Evacuation

Our final day on the battlefields will be spent exploring the last great operations of the campaign: the breakout from the Anzac sector, the landing at Suvla and the final evacuation of Gallipoli. We will explore key sites from this often overlooked chapter of history, both north of the Anzac sector and also at Suvla Bay. Today’s touring will be a combination of coach visits and short walks. At the end of this special day we will return to Anzac Cove and stand in the spot where the Anzacs both landed in April and evacuated in December 1915. We will conduct a brief memorial service and have time for private reflection as the sun sets across the shimmering waters of the Aegean. We will then farewell the Gallipoli battlefields and return to our hotel. (B, L)

Day 9 > Thursday, 29 May 2025 | Gallipoli to Istanbul

Today we will say goodbye to the peninsula are return to Istanbul. Or arrival we will check in to our hotel, before coming together this evening for a farewell dinner in a traditional Turkish restaurant. (B, L, D)

Day 10 > Friday, 30 May 2025 | Farewell
