Tanks in Town – Commemorating the Liberation of Mons 1944
Tanks in Town is an annual event in Mons in Belgium which takes place in early September to commemorate the liberation of the city in 1944. Second World War military vehicles and operational tanks come over as part of the event and on this special tour we combine a day at the event along with a visit to the battlefields in the Ardennes where the Battle of the Bulge took place in 1944 seeing the foxholes and museums around Bastogne.
Itinerary
Day 1 > Arrive Belgium
Regional departure by coach, then to Belgium for a three-night stay.
Day 2 > Bastogne
We begin this morning in the area west of Mons where the Tanks in Town Association will have a tank and vehicle display, plus a large militaria fair selling military memorabilia. Tank rides are also available here from the organisers. We will remain here for the lunch period and then depart for the Ardennes Battlefields and look at the ‘Battle of the Bulge’. We look at the role of US Airborne forces in the Ardennes in 1944, go to Foy, and the woods nearby to look at the story of Easy Company – the ‘Band of Brothers’ – during the fighting here in 1944. We end the day in Bastogne and visit the 101st Airborne Museum. (B)
